Once the beds are prepped and ready for the next seeding, the secret is to rake them once again. This will carefully deposit excess rocks and debris into the aisles, which we then gather and remove from the shelter. When it comes to direct seeding, a uniform surface provides a better likelihood of success. It allows the seeder to roll unimpeded along the bed, distributing seeds onto the soil without a hitch.

The bed preparation rake can also be used to mark rows on the bed surface before transplanting a crop. To do this, we use row markers or cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) tubing. We slide the tubes onto the tines that match the crop’s row spacing, then pull the rake down the length of the prepared bed. At this stage, we make sure to walk in a straight line as this will facilitate weeding. When marking rows with this technique, we create a grid by running the rake along both the length and width of the bed. Where the lines cross, a seedling will need to be transplanted.
